the ignition coil. is a separate part
the ignition module replaced the points and condenser that cars used to have.
some of the newer autos have a separate coil for each cylinder and use cam and or crank sensors to tell each coil when to fire thus eliminating the distributor and the components inside it. IE the module, stator and pickup coil.
Coil steps up the volts from 20 to around 20,000, (to lazy to go look it up for exact number) the ignition control moduel does what its name implies, it controls the ignition. It sends voltage to the coil and can be mounted on the distributor (classic GM) or anywhere else. They are two completely seperate things with different purposes.
Sometimes they are packaged together, but they are completely different things. To make a (very) long story short, the module is what turns the coil on and off.
